The cloud-aerosol transition zone assessed from ceilometer measurements

This study presents a method to quantify the frequency of occurrence of cloud-aerosol transition zone (TZ) conditions as well as to analyze its vertical distribution. The main results indicate that ceilometer backscatter retrievals show a gradual transition from a cloudy to a cloud-free atmosphere, and that cloud detection is influenced by the set of thresholds used. From a column integrated point of view, the TZ was present in 9.3% of profiles, with an estimated uncertainty range of 5.4–20%.
