Members of NUBESOL-2 project are attending the IRS2022 meeting
The International Radiation Symposium is organized every 4 years by the International Radiation Commission (IRC) of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS). This edition should have taken place in 2020, but it was postponed until now due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting is being hosted by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Josep-Abel González, Josep Calbó and Yolanda Sola, researchers from the University of Girona and the University of Barcelona involved in the NUBESOL-2 project are attending the meeting and presenting some results from the project in the Session 6, devoted to Radiation Budget and Forcing (the abstracts can be found here). Specifically, the three contributions are:
- How important is the transition zone between clouds and aerosol? (Abstract 82)
- Sensitivity analysis of the transition zone between clouds and aerosols in radiative transfer models (Abstract 401)
- Cloud-aerosol transition zone detection from surface longwave downward radiation measurements (Abstract 202)
These contributions regard the topic of what is called the “transition zone”, which corresponds to conditions in the air that cannot be classified as “pure aerosol” nor “pure cloud”. This is quite a new topic, that is also being developed by other groups, and has risen remarkable interest in the community.
The meeting has been a good opportunity to re-establish face-to-face contact with all-around-the-globe scientists that are working on all aspects of atmospheric radiation, including measurements, theoretical and modeling studies.
